You may have heard references in the press and other media lately about potential developments in Scottish education to improve attainment - this is all linked to the announcement of a draft National Improvement Framework for Scottish Education. All Parent Councils have thie week received a letter from Angela Constance MSP, the Scottish Government's Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning.

This is a key extract from the letter:

As we move forward to further develop the Framework, I want to hear from parents, teachers and children. There are a number of engagement events around the country where you can come along and discuss the proposals. I would also encourage you to discuss the Framework at your Parent Council and Local Area Parent Forum. I would be interested in any feedback you may have. You can find out more information about the Framework and the events at :
I recognise the importance of keeping parents informed of any developments affecting their children’s education and I will continue to work closely with the National Parent Forum of Scotland to make sure that you and parents in your school get regular information and updates about the Framework development.

Our regional branch of the National Parent Forum of Scotland also focuses on the Framework in its recently circulated NPFS Aberdeenshire August newsletter.

The Framework is still in draft so parental feedback is important at this stage. As the NPFS newsletter makes clear, there is more to the draft Framework than the media's headline topic of standardised assessment.

The local engagement event is on the 8th of October at the AECC and is open to all parents. There is an afternoon and evening session (1-4pm; 5-30-8pm). To attend you should register via this link Our chairperson, Yvonne Leathley, plans to attend.

Here's an opportunity for parents to support the school in a direct way on an ad hoc basis.

(from the school website: Banchory Academy are looking for volunteers to help out if and when available with various school events and trips. Please come along top get more information and sign up. Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme enrolment may be required to be a helper.  Parent Helpers Enrolment Open Sessions will be held on Tuesday 15th September 13:00-13:55 and Thursday 17th of September 17:00-18:00. In Drama Studio 2).

The use of parent helpers for certain events will free up more staff and lessen the impact on the teaching of pupils not involved in those events.

Our parent council belongs to the Scottish Parent Teacher Council, SPTC, a national umbrella organisation promoting parental involvement in education.

From time to time they send us links to surveys to glean parents’ views about certain topics.
We’ve recently heard from them about two:

We will try and post links from our website whenever we’re notified of further surveys.
You can also sign up (for free) as an individual with the SPTC’s Parents’ Voice to receive direct email links to future surveys.
