Back in November we announced the Scottish Government's consultation about Empowering Schools. This heralds what will be a significant change in educational governance, with many responsibilities currently held by the local authority devolved down to schools or up to new regional improvement collaboratives covering several local authorities. Discussion and debate is ongoing nationally and some aspects are contentious, so the eventual implications for individual schools are not yet fully clear, but whatever happens there will be changes afoot. As is often the way with government consultations, this one was complex to respond to as it presupposed more familiarity with current local, regional and national arrangments than most parents would ever have, but the parent council did its best to reply on behalf of the parent body (and of course some among you will probably have sent individual responses too) by representing the views discussed at parent council on the subject.
For the record, here is Banchory Academy Parent Council's response to the Empowring Schools consultation.
Firstly, we apologise for the lack of update on this page recently. Minutes of meetings continue to be posted in the usual place (Meetings tab) but our web editor has had competing external demands which left little time for other posts. However, the good news is that our Facebook page has been revamped by parent Linda Stromberg and you will find a lot of useful and timely information over there. Look for the Banchory Academy Parent Forum page - please like and share posts that you find useful.
Although not yet reflected in this website, we have embarked on an overhaul of our communications and hope to have all improvements complete by the end of the 2017/2018 session. We are particularly grateful for the opportunity to use the school’s GroupCall messaging system to send Parent Council information to all parents directly; this is new to us this year and we hope has been useful.
Our March meeting scheduled for March 1st has been postponed due to the snow. It will now take place on March 15th (7pm in the school library).
Among other topics, we'll be covering the following:
- health & wellbeing working group
- improving Tillybrake field
- additional support needs
- links with primary schools
- how to support PTA fundraising
- how the community can keep land set aside for an eventual new academy
- effect of anti-social behaviour on the community
- update from literacy, numeracy & careers talks working group
Please don't hesitate to email email@example.com if you have any suggestions or queries. All parents/carers of Academy pupils are welcome at parent council meetings and no advance notice of attendance is required.
The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on the content of a new Education Bill which will empower schools and strengthen the role of parents. The consultation is open from 7th November 2017 - 30th January 2018. It's an online survey (link below) and anyone can respond whether as an individual or on behalf of a group. The Parent Council will make a group response, but individual parents may wish to make their own personal response.
John Swinney (Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Skills) writes:
"The reforms which the Bill will bring about will enable decisions about…
